Sweet and Spooky: Nourishing Halloween Treats for Kids

As a mom and health advocate, I know how much kids love Halloween treats, but I also understand the importance of making sure they’re getting healthy options that taste delicious. Halloween doesn’t have to be all about candy—you can create fun, tasty, and nutritious treats at home that kids will love. The best part? You can get creative with wholesome ingredients while still embracing the spooky spirit of the holiday!
One of my favorite healthy treats to make are "banana ghosts" and "clementine pumpkins." All you need are bananas, peeled clementines, dark chocolate chips, and celery sticks. Cut the bananas in half and use the chocolate chips for the eyes and mouth, making little ghosts. For the pumpkins, peel the clementines and stick a small piece of celery in the top as the “pumpkin stem.” These treats are naturally sweet, packed with vitamins, and super easy to make.
Another fun idea is creating "apple monster mouths." Slice apples into wedges, spread some almond butter (or any nut butter) between two slices, and add slivered almonds or sunflower seeds to make “teeth.” You can also stick a small marshmallow or piece of fruit as the “tongue” for extra fun. These are great for a mix of protein, fiber, and sweetness, making them both satisfying and healthy.
For a more indulgent but still wholesome option, try making "pumpkin energy bites." These bites are made with oats, pumpkin puree, a little honey, chia seeds, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Simply mix everything together, roll them into bite-sized balls, and refrigerate. They’re rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats, and they make a perfect treat that feels like dessert but packs nutritional benefits.
If you’re feeling extra creative, you can make "spooky fruit kabobs." Use a variety of fruits like grapes, strawberries, and melons, and assemble them on skewers. Add a drizzle of dark chocolate or a sprinkle of shredded coconut to make them feel more festive. These are fun to make with the kids and can be a healthier alternative to candy while still satisfying their sweet tooth.
Halloween can be both fun and healthy with a little creativity in the kitchen.
